Tuesday 18 August 2015, the 49th (our 11th) commemoration of the Battle of Long Tan was held under beautiful blue skies and warm weather with 160 or so veterans, their families and friends attending our morning service.
It was the second service without our good mate Peter (Davey) Crockett who had passed away only weeks prior to the 2014 service. Dave was the inspiration and driving force behind the creation of our memorial and it was fitting that a plaque honouring his commitment was in place. His family attended and no doubt Davey was watching on from above. Knowing Dave as we did, there was no service, pomp or ceremony. His family were more than happy to quietly view the plaque on the day with other veterans.
Father Tom Chapman (in the absence of Father John Darbyshire) conducted a reading and prayer while Bob Meehan of 4RAR gave an insightful presentation as the guest speaker. Many former serviceman joined representatives from the RSL, DVA, Legacy, South Tweed Sports and Twin Town Services Club in laying wreaths during the ceremony.
Others to lay wreaths included Federal Member for Richmond Justine Elliot and State Member for Tweed Geoff Provest. St Joseph’s Primary School Teacher Debbie Tietzel and her wonderful children’s choir sang ‘Advance Australia Fair’ and introduced a new song on the day honouring veterans.
